Step into a world of color, creativity, and calm at Villa Puebla, a beautifully restored historic home nestled in the heart of the French Alps. Featured in the Swedish magazine Gods och Gårdar, our charming villa is located in the alpine village of Barcelonnette, right on the edge of France’s most untouched national park, Mercantour.
Here, nature, art, and inspiration come together. During our days, we enjoy peaceful walks in the mountains, long lunches in the village square, and quiet moments in the gardens of Villa Puebla. If you wish, start your morning with gentle yoga or mindfulness led by a local teacher—no experience needed, just a willingness to slow down and tune in.
Join celebrated textile artist Anna Bauer for a joyful deep dive into Hönsestrik—a playful, expressive knitting tradition from 1970s Denmark. Known for its bright colors, personal messages, and eclectic patterns, Hönsestrik is all about breaking the rules and following your imagination. It’s knitting as rebellion, as joy, as art.
Each morning, Anna will guide you through themed sessions exploring the history, techniques, colors, and creative spirit of Hönsestrik. You’ll begin your own project—anything from a swatch to a sweater—and bring it to life in your own unique style.
Afternoons are reserved for hands-on knitting and personal guidance, plus plenty of time to relax, reflect, and be inspired by the nature and architecture around us.
Whether you’re looking to revive your creativity, deepen your craft, or simply try something new, this retreat offers a warm and welcoming space to do just that. Basic knitting skills are helpful—but no need to be a pro.
Anna Bauer is a Swedish textile artist and author of Hönsestrik – A Love Story, Hönsestrik Forever, Dye Yarn and Knit, Cardigan & Dress, and Anna Bauer’s Pattern Book. Trained at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg (HDK), Anna is known for her colorful, boundary-free approach to knitting that encourages expression, fun, and freedom.
Two-ply wool yarn will be available for purchase, or feel free to bring your own. You’ll also need:
Circular needles (various lengths)
Double-pointed needles, sizes 2.5 mm and 3 mm (or suitable sizes for your yarn)

To secure your spot, a 20% payment is due upon final booking confirmation. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 60 days before your stay.
We recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover any unforeseen events, such as illness before or during your trip. It’s also a good idea to choose a flexible or refundable travel ticket.
You are responsible for booking your own travel. The nearest airport is Marseille, and from there it’s approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to Villa Puebla. We will do our best to coordinate shared transportation so you can split the cost—we’re happy to help with tips and suggestions.
